Feeling Great in 2008

I have been thinking lately about my family's health... It was so great to go into the doctor yesterday with my kids for a well visit for Blake and Austin. The Pediatrician mentioned how she hadn't seen Austin since his 5 year old check up and hadn't seen Blake since his 12 month! I feel so strongly that, while the occasional cold is inevitable, but that children staying relatively healthy has so much to do with their eating habits. As I have tried to focus more on what my kids are eating I feel their overall health has increased so much! You may or may not agree...

I thought I would pass on this information that has helped me figure out what is "good" and "not
so good" for kids (and adults) to be eating!

Pediatrician, Dr. William Sears recommends, avoiding what he calls “The Terrible Three.” Try looking for these three artificial additives in the foods you buy, and search for alternative food choices:

1 High-fructose corn syrup
2Hydrogenated oils/Partially Hydrogenated oils or “trans fats”
3 Any color additive with a number
symbol attached to it (e.g. blue #1, yellow #5, red #40)

These are three easy-to-remember ways to recognize foods that merit the label “junk food.” Try eliminating one at a time, over time. It may take a little label hunting at first, but if you can make this one change – avoiding foods that contain these 3 ingredients - you are well on your way to “de-junking” your family‛s diet! -William Sears, M.D., from The Healthiest Kid in the Neighborhood .

Here are some GREAT food finds and latest favs for breakfast and snacks... Don't forget the regular ones (eggs, fresh fruit & veggies, food packed with whole grains, etc.) But, if you are looking for a change here are some ideas.
