Showdown... minivan vs SUV

(side note: This is kinda a lame post but I was sick of seeing the fire post and I didn't want to bring more bad news and make a post only about that we spent an hour in our closet today because of a tornado watch. Don't worry we have our 72 hour kits and games in there. The tornado sirens went off for awhile then stopped. All is well and we were only left with golf ball sized hail.)

Okay onto the real post. In Texas you drive up to church, the gym, the park, the pool, you name it and see a sea of mini vans in all different shapes, sizes, and colors. The last few times I have driven in Arizona I think I maybe saw one mini van every 100 cars (which 90% were SUV's). Texas is truck country, but don't tell Texas that I beg to differ. AZ has it beat with all it's SUV's. So all of you mom's... what's the deal? I have nothing against SUV's, but I do have to wonder as a foreigner coming back:

-at like $20,000 less
-with doors that open for you
-with way more miles to the gallon
-with stow and go seating that allows you to fit another family inside

What gives? *As a mini van driver I would hate to be stoned as I reach the city limits.

*No, I am not afraid to be different mom. I really am just wondering.
